Arkansas's medical marijuana program traces back to a 2016 ballot measure. Voters approved Amendment 98, also known as Issue 6, establishing a legal framework for medical cannabis use overseen by the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH). That recommendation still has to be registered with the state within 30 days, after which the ADH mails the physical Arkansas medical marijuana card. Eligibility generally requires patients to be 21 or older, though 18-year-olds with a qualifying condition can participate with guardian consent.

Patient Rights

Once registered, Arkansas patients gain several concrete rights. They may possess up to 2.5 ounces of medical cannabis every 14 days from any licensed dispensary in the state, along with legal protection for that possession under Arkansas law. The program does not permit home cultivation, so dispensary purchases are the only legal source of product. Cards remain valid for one year, and patients can renew up to 60 days before expiration to avoid a lapse in coverage. Two patients with the same diagnosis on paper can present very differently, and it's up to the evaluating physician to confirm that your specific symptoms and severity genuinely meet the clinical threshold for that condition, not just that you've received the diagnosis at some point. That means your intake form and consultation should be thorough: current treatments, how long you've been dealing with the condition, and how it affects daily functioning all factor into the physician's decision.
