Kentucky's medical cannabis program was established by Senate Bill 47, signed into law on March 31, 2023, and officially launched on January 1, 2025. The program is regulated by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services through the Office of Medical Cannabis. January 2025 – Program Launch
- Medical cannabis program officially begins on January 1, 2025, with Patient and Caregiver Registry Portal opening for applications. Over 11,000 patients become certified.
September 2025 – Dispensaries to Open in Fall
- Medical cannabis dispensaries are scheduled to open in fall across Kentucky to serve registered patients with certified medical conditions.
Kentucky Possession Limits
Kentucky law establishes specific supply limits based on time periods, with practitioners able to authorize higher amounts when medically necessary.
- Patients may possess up to a 30-day supply at their residence and a 10-day supply on their person (in original dispensary container).
- Standard 30-day supply limits: 112 grams (4 ounces) of flower, 3,900 mg of THC-infused products (edibles/oils/tinctures), or 28 grams of concentrates.
- Standard 10-day supply limits: 37.5 grams of flower, 1,300 mg of THC-infused products, or 9.5 grams of concentrates.
- Practitioners may authorize higher amounts if standard limits would not provide adequate therapeutic relief.
- Designated caregivers may purchase and possess a 30-day supply for each registered patient they assist.
- Cannabis must be kept in original dispensary packaging when not at home.
- Home cultivation is illegal.
- Kentucky medical cannabis registry cards are valid for one year from issuance and must be renewed annually.
