Nevada's medical program was established in 2001 through the Medical Use of Marijuana Act and is regulated by Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB). Patients with qualifying conditions can receive registry identification cards and access medical marijuana through licensed dispensaries.

• Qualifying conditions include cancer, AIDS, epilepsy, PTSD, chronic pain, autism spectrum disorder, and opioid dependence.

2001 – Medical Program Established

• Nevada passes the Medical Use of Marijuana Act, establishing a state registry program.

2014 – Medical Establishment Licensing

• Nevada begins licensing medical marijuana establishments including dispensaries, cultivation facilities, and testing laboratories.

2016 – Adult-Use Legalization

• Nevada voters pass the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act (Ballot Question 2) with 54% approval, legalizing adult-use cannabis.

2017 – Adult-Use Implementation

• Adult-use cannabis becomes legal January 1, 2017.
• Licensed retail sales officially launch on July 1

2020 – Administrative Transfer

• Cannabis Compliance Board assumes administration of medical cannabis program from Department of Taxation, while DPBH continues managing patient registry.

2025 – Program Modernization

• Online portal temporarily unavailable while system undergoes updates, with applications accepted via mail, email, fax, and in-person methods.

Nevada law establishes separate marijuana possession allowances for medical patients versus adult-use consumers.

• Medical patients may possess up to 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana per 14-day period
• Medical patients may cultivate up to 12 mature plants at home only if they meet at least one of these criteria: no dispensary within 25 miles, too ill or lack the transportation to travel, the specific strain of cannabis needed for their treatment not available.
• Adult-use consumers (21+) may possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower and 0.25 ounces of concentrate.
• Adult-use consumers may cultivate up to 6 plants per person, maximum 12 plants per household, only if residing more than 25 miles from licensed dispensary.
• All cultivation must occur in locked rooms not visible to public.
